Prairie State leads Region 4 contingent at men's tennis nationals
PLANO, TEXAS - Prairie State College completed its farewell season with a ninth place finish at the NJCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships, marking the highest finish by a Region 4 team. The College of Lake County, Illinois Valley Community College, and Oakton College also competed.
Prairie State racked up 19.5 points to reach the top ten in the tournament, which was won by Wallace State Community College with 45.0 points. Lake County was 15th with 5.0 points, while IVCC was 17th with 4.0 points and Oakton was 18th with zero points.
Region 4 Athlete of the Year Yoog Gundani, along with teammates Ben Lawrie, Fergus Larkin, and Jonathan Hii each opened with wins in Round of 16 in their respective singles flight. Unfortunately, none of the quartet was able to advance through the quarterfinal round. Meanwhile, Marko Brkovic went on to win the Singles Flight #3 Consolation championship with a 9-7 victory.
Illinois Valley's Nick Olivero and PSC's Tendai Chihowa squared off in the Singles Flight #2 Consolation title match, with Olivero winning 8-6.
In doubles, Larkin and Lawrie of Prairie State claimed the Flight #2 Consolation championship with an 8-4 decision, while the Eagles duo of Fabricio Barron and Tyson Phillips reached the consolation semifinals in Flight #1. The Flight #3 bracket saw Pablo Galan and Nathan Popov of Lake County win in straight sets in the Round of 32 and the Pioneers tandem of Marko Brkovic and Tendai Chihowa claimed victory in the Round of 16.
